About the trekking

Traditional roads were ancient means of communication between peoples. Roads of miners, haulers, shepherds, smugglers, and even maquis. Some also served as access to the works of hydroelectric power stations, forests or high mountain pastures. All of them wishing to escape from oblivion and be part of the connection of the 33 villages of the Val d’Aran. In addition, small villages have been added, exceeding a total of 40 inhabited areas.

And this is how our path has embarked on its long journey, entering fantastic forests of beeches, oaks, firs, crossing ancient meadows and discovering small nooks and crannies. In total, covering 150 km with a cumulative difference of 6000m of ascent and other 6000m of descent.

Program

Do you have 8 days?

“The Artery of the Val d’Aran” is the route that covers the entire route. Its beginning is in Vielha, located in the center of the valley. By choosing this option your path will travel through the beautiful Naut Aran (High Aran in Aranese) in your first days when the Romanesque culture will be present in each of your steps. Then you will leave behind this magnificent area to discover the atmosphere and movement of the most populated area of the Valley, known as Mijaran (Mig Aran). And after visiting more than a dozen villages you will enter the Baish Aran (Lower Aran), the area known as the wildest in the valley and also the most quiet and relaxed.

Do you have 5 days?

“The route through the Naut Aran” as its name suggests basically travels through the villages of the Upper Aran, east of the valley. Its main attraction lies in the beauty and history of its villages and the value with which Romanesque art has managed to remain, being also very cared for by its people. If you choose this option you will go through the highest point of the route (Plan de Beret) and you will sleep in the old abandoned village of Montgarri. Your steps will make their mark in towns as famous as Bagergue, Arties, Unha or Garòs.

Are you coming for the weekend?

“The getaway of the 14 villages” is an ideal opportunity to savor the Camin Reiau for a weekend. We will leave Vielha, the main town in the Mijaran area (Mig Aran) to direct our steps towards Vilamòs, the village considered by many to be the most beautiful in the valley. On our way we find a dozen villages that will suddenly appear to us and surprise us with their beauty and pure Pyrenean style. This afternoon in Vilamòs we suggest you visit its museum, where you will delve into the culture and life of its people. The return the next day we will do it on the other side of the river, passing by other villages but with more time to enjoy the landscape and the nature of the place until we reach Vielha again.

Do you have 4 days?

“The route through the Baish Aran” basically goes through the villages and roads of the Lower Aran. This is your route if what you want is to do long days walking without finding anything but landscape and nature. Of course, the few villages you will find are bustling and atmospheric, such as Les and Bossòst. If you choose this route you will pass by Bausen, one of the most charming villages and you will discover the most mysterious beech forest in the valley. It is also the least visited area of the valley, so if you are one of those who like to break the norm and walk calmly, choose this path.
